Chimzar's Card of the Day #10 - Man-Eating Demon (Black Rare)

Look mom, no mana cost!

Edit: Human Offering granted pseudo Flash, but I don't think it fits with the flavor.

  1. 202.1b Some objects have no mana cost. This normally includes all land cards, any other cards that have no mana symbols where their mana cost would appear, tokens (unless the effect that creates them specifies otherwise), and nontraditional _Magic_ cards. Having no mana cost represents an unpayable cost (see rule 117.6). Note that lands are played without paying any costs (see rule 305, "Lands").

117.6. Some mana costs contain no mana symbols. This represents an unpayable cost. An ability can also have an unpayable cost if its cost is based on the mana cost of an object with no mana cost. Attempting to cast a spell or activate an ability that has an unpayable cost is a legal action. However, attempting to pay an unpayable cost is an illegal action.

202.2. An object is the color or colors of the mana symbols in its mana cost, regardless of the color of its frame.

202.2b Objects with no colored mana symbols in their mana costs are colorless.

This spell is 1) Uncastable (Unpayable Cost - Cost of human = Unpayable Cost), and 2) Not black despite having a black frame. I think you mean "Colorless Rare".

  2. First, with transform cards, the card frame was updated to have a color dot in front of the type instead of having color specified text. MTG Set Edit has not updated its frames yet to support this so I represented it with just the frame. I understand your confusion.

Secondly, yes, you cannot pay its mana cost as it doesn't have one. Checking the rules on Offering, it is a static ability that changes cost, instead of an alternate cost as the reminder text makes it seem. Therefore, you are correct in saying it is uncastable. I will edit it to make it playable.

  3. I haven't tested it myself, but this update:

Should allow you to use color indicators if you do want to use the current templating.

  4. Also one more small thing: "As an additional cost TO CAST ~..."
